Nevis is a small island in the Caribbean located in the Caribbean Sea. It makes up part of the two island nation of St. Kitts-Nevis. Nevis is located approximately 200 miles to the south of Puerto Rico. The island is approximately 36 square miles.
The islands where first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. St. Kitts and Nevis were first settled by the British in 1623. St. Kitts and Nevis then achieved their own independence from British Rule in 1983. In 1998 a vote in Nevis to separate itself from St Kitts occurred, and fell just short of the two-thirds majority that is required. The official language is English. The total population is approximately 44,000. The capital of Nevis is Charlestown.
The climate in Nevis is tropical and tempered by constant sea breeze. There is little seasonal temperature variations. The rainy season occurs from May to November.
Sugar is the most dominant crop inside Nevis. Tourism, export manufacturing, and offshore banking are large roles in the economy.
